Gas Prices Continue to Decline in August: A Welcome Relief Amid Rising Living Costs

Article content:

Retail gas prices in Vietnam have continued their downward trend into August 2025, marking the third consecutive month of reductions. This ongoing decline follows the global market trend and provides much-needed financial relief to both households and businesses amid persistent cost pressures.

Domestic Gas Prices Drop Further in August

According to Petrolimex Gas Corporation, the retail price for a 12kg household gas cylinder in Hanoi is listed at VND 416,100, including VAT, down VND 18,100 compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, a 48kg industrial cylinder is priced at VND 1,664,100, reflecting a VND 72,600 decrease.

The price cut is attributed to the average contract price of gas on the global market for August, which dropped to USD 505 per ton, down USD 55 per ton from July.

Since the beginning of 2025, gas prices in Vietnam have been adjusted five times downward and three times remained unchanged, indicating a relatively stable and favorable price trend.

Positive Impact on Households and Businesses

Experts highlight that this price reduction is a positive development at a time when inflation and cost-of-living concerns remain high. For households, it means lower monthly expenses, particularly during peak usage seasons. For businesses — especially in hospitality and manufacturing — it offers a valuable opportunity to rebalance operational costs and improve profit margins.

Tips to Maximize Gas Efficiency

Both individual and commercial consumers can reduce gas consumption and optimize usage through a few practical steps:

Regularly inspect gas pipelines and equipment for leaks.

Use energy-efficient gas stoves to save up to 8% on consumption.

Clean burners and stove grates weekly to improve combustion efficiency.

Choose pots with flat bottoms and suitable diameters to retain heat better.

For restaurants, hotels, and industrial kitchens:

Lock in fixed-price gas contracts for 1–3 months when prices drop.

Optimize kitchen layouts to ensure even heat distribution.

Purchase gas in bulk to reduce delivery and logistics costs.

Global Market Trends

As of 5:30 PM on July 31 (Vietnam time), natural gas (LNG) prices in the U.S. stood at USD 3.02 per mmBTU, marking a 0.79% drop. In Europe, the Dutch TTF gas price for September contracts remained low due to stable supply from Norway.

In Asia, the JKM spot benchmark fell below USD 12 per mmBTU, driven by weak demand and consistent LNG supply. Meanwhile, the Henry Hub natural gas price in the U.S. hovered around USD 3 per mmBTU, reflecting oversupply and steady inventory levels.
