Lockheed Martin Secures $4.2 Billion Deal to Boost GMLRS Rocket Production

Article content:

Major Contract to Expand Guided Rocket Manufacturing

Lockheed Martin has signed a $4.234 billion contract modification with the U.S. Army to continue producing the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS).
According to a Pentagon notice, the contract will be managed by the Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal and is set to run through October 20, 2027. This deal marks the latest increment in a multi-year GMLRS production program, bringing the program’s total value to approximately $13.3 billion.

Production Surge: Targeting Nearly 19,000 Rockets Annually

This new agreement supports a significant scale-up in GMLRS output, as the Army plans to reach a sustained production rate of nearly 19,000 rockets per year by FY2028.
Much of this increase will come from specialized warhead variants, including:

Unitary rounds (M31A1/A2) with high-explosive payloads,

Alternative Warhead rounds (M30A1) designed without cluster munitions,

Extended-Range GMLRS (ER), featuring a larger motor to achieve ranges of up to 150 km.

GMLRS rockets are GPS and inertially guided precision munitions capable of delivering accurate strikes within a 10-meter circular error probable. They are launched from either the tracked M270A2 MLRS or the wheeled M142 HIMARS systems, both renowned for their “shoot-and-scoot” capability, enabling rapid deployment and relocation after firing.

Global Demand Driven by Combat Experience

This contract comes amid rising international demand for GMLRS, especially after its demonstrated effectiveness on the battlefield in Ukraine.
To meet growing requirements from both U.S. forces and allied nations, Lockheed Martin is expanding production lines in Grand Prairie, Texas, and Camden, Arkansas. The agreement also covers foreign military sales (FMS), reinforcing GMLRS as a cornerstone of modern long-range precision fires and ensuring a steady stockpile for the U.S. Army and its partners.
