Safety Alert Issued After Earthquake in New Jersey Shakes New York

Article content:

Late on August 2, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck northern New Jersey, causing tremors that were felt across parts of New York City. Although the quake did not cause significant damage, it prompted authorities to quickly issue safety advisories for residents.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 10:18 PM local time, with its epicenter located approximately 10 kilometers below Hasbrouck Heights, a suburb in New Jersey. Despite its relatively low magnitude, the tremor was strong enough to be clearly felt in several areas of New York City, including Manhattan and the Bronx.

The New York City Emergency Management Department (NYCEM) stated that it is actively monitoring and assessing the potential impacts of the earthquake. In a public statement, NYCEM advised residents:

“Be prepared for possible aftershocks, which may occur minutes, hours, or even days after the initial quake. Take time to thoroughly inspect your surroundings for any potential hazards.”

No Reported Damage Yet, But Stay Vigilant

As of the end of August 2, there were no reports of injuries or property damage. However, the USGS cautioned that even low-magnitude quakes can have notable effects in densely populated urban environments like New York. Tremors may cause objects to fall, or cracks to appear in building foundations and walls.

Residents are encouraged to check for the following warning signs:

New cracks on walls, ceilings, or floors

Displaced or damaged items around the house

Unusual changes in electrical, water, or gas systems

Early inspection can help reduce risks from potential aftershocks and ensure safety for households and communities alike.

Seismic Activity Rising Across the Pacific Region

This incident follows just days after a powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30—one of the most intense seismic events globally in over a decade. The quake not only triggered widespread tsunami alerts but also caused seven volcanoes in the region, including the long-dormant Krasheninnikov, to erupt simultaneously.

Geologists warn that seismic activity along the Pacific Ring of Fire is on the rise, calling for heightened preparedness in major cities such as New York, Tokyo, and San Francisco to improve resilience against natural disasters.
