Hungary Pushes for Trump-Putin Peace Talks Ahead of Key Alaska Summit

12 tháng 8 2025

On August 11, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó held a phone conversation with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov to discuss the upcoming summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15 in Alaska.

Following the call, Minister Szijjártó shared on his personal platform that the upcoming summit represents a historic opportunity to pave the way for peace in Ukraine. He reaffirmed Hungary’s consistent position that the conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield, but must be addressed through direct negotiations.

“The best chance for peace lies in a direct agreement between the United States and Russia — two superpowers with decisive influence over Europe’s security architecture,” he emphasized.

Hungary Criticizes EU’s Role in Undermining Peace Efforts

Szijjártó also expressed criticism toward certain European Union (EU) leaders, accusing them of deliberately obstructing dialogue between Trump and Putin. He underlined that Hungary will continue to support U.S.-Russia negotiations and work to counter any EU attempts to derail peace efforts.

Hungary has long advocated for a more pragmatic and sovereignty-based approach to foreign policy, often diverging from mainstream EU positions, especially regarding the war in Ukraine and relations with Russia.

Upcoming Multilateral Talks Led by Germany

In a related development, a spokesperson for the German government announced that Germany will host an online conference on August 13 to explore possible solutions to end the war in Ukraine. The virtual meeting is expected to include leaders from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Finland, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and senior officials from the EU and NATO.
