Russia Launches Largest Drone and Missile Attack of the War on Ukraine, Killing at Least 12
25 tháng 5 2025
Russia launched a record-breaking aerial assault on Ukraine, firing 367 drones and missiles across multiple regions. The attack killed at least 12 people and injured dozens more in the largest strike since the war began in 2022.
Unprecedented Russian Aerial Assault Across Ukraine
In the early hours of Sunday morning, Russia launched the largest drone-and-missile strike of the war on Ukraine, targeting Kyiv and numerous other regions. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 367 aerial weapons were used—69 missiles and 298 drones, including Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
Yuriy Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Air Force, confirmed that it was “the most massive aerial strike on Ukrainian territory since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.”
Casualties and Damage Across Multiple Cities
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that over 30 towns and villages were struck, including Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil, Chernihiv, Sumy, Odesa, Poltava, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Cherkasy.
In Kyiv, at least 4 people were killed and 16 injured, according to national security officials.
A student dormitory in Holosiivskyi district was hit, sparking a large fire.
A residential house in Dniprovskyi was destroyed.
Three children (ages 8, 12, and 17) died in Zhytomyr.
Four people were killed in Khmelnytskyi, and one man died in Mykolaiv.
Kyiv Day Marred by Destruction
The strike came on Kyiv Day, a national holiday celebrating the capital’s founding in the 5th century.
“This was a deliberate strike on ordinary cities,” Zelenskyy said. “Residential buildings were damaged and destroyed.”
Zelenskyy Urges Stronger Sanctions on Russia
Zelenskyy used the occasion to call on the international community to increase sanctions against Russia:
“Without truly strong pressure on the Russian leadership, this brutality cannot be stopped. Sanctions will certainly help.”
He emphasized the need for “determination from the United States, European countries, and all peace-seeking nations.”
Prisoner Exchange Offers No Relief from Escalation
Despite a rare three-day prisoner swap—the largest of the war—hostilities have not eased.
Each side exchanged 307 prisoners on Saturday, following a swap of 390 people the day before.
A final exchange was expected on Sunday.
Still, intense shelling and drone attacks persisted throughout Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed it had shot down 110 Ukrainian drones during the night.
A Village in Ruins: Markhalivka Devastated
In Markhalivka, a village just outside Kyiv, elderly residents Liubov and Ivan Fedorenko stood in front of their destroyed home in tears.
“It looks like Bakhmut, like Mariupol — it's horrifying,” said Liubov (76).
“Thank God my daughter and grandchildren weren’t here.”
Ivan (80) mourned the death of their dogs, who burned to death in the fire:
“I want to bury them, but I’m not allowed yet.”
Conclusion: War Escalates Despite Peace Talks and Prisoner Swaps
While diplomatic channels like the prisoner exchange offer glimmers of cooperation, Russia’s record-setting aerial attack underscores that the war is far from over.
With civilian casualties rising and infrastructure crumbling, Ukraine continues to call for greater international pressure on Russia to halt the violence.
