Russia Publishes Identities of Deceased Ukrainian Soldiers in Zaporozhye

09 tháng 6 2025

Russia releases names and personal details of Ukrainian soldiers killed in Zaporozhye, claiming transparency and accusing Kyiv of concealing casualties. The move intensifies tensions over delayed body and prisoner exchanges.

Russia Reveals List of Fallen Ukrainian Soldiers – Kyiv Accused of Withholding Information

On the evening of June 7, Evgeny Balitsky, the Russian-appointed governor of Zaporozhye, published the first six pages of a list containing the names, identification documents, and death locations of Ukrainian soldiers killed in recent battles.

“We are releasing this list so relatives can identify the dead. Kyiv has this data but seems unwilling to share it,” Balitsky said.

Body Exchange Delayed – Russia Accuses Ukraine of Avoiding Responsibility

According to Lieutenant General Alexander Zorin, the first convoy carrying the remains of 1,212 Ukrainian soldiers reached the designated exchange point as planned, but no Ukrainian representatives appeared.

Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Russian negotiation team, confirmed that Ukraine had also been given a list of 640 young and wounded prisoners to prepare for an exchange.

“The reasons Ukraine gives for the delay vary and lack clarity,” Medinsky stated, urging Ukraine to uphold its agreements and ensure proper burial of the deceased.

Russia suggests that the delay may be intentional, aimed at concealing the scale of war losses and avoiding financial obligations to soldiers' families.

“As long as a soldier is listed as missing, the family receives no compensation,” Balitsky argued.

Ukraine Responds: Cooperation Is Ongoing

Ukrainian officials have denied stalling, affirming that both sides are coordinating the exchange of prisoners and bodies. Some Ukrainian news outlets reported that the operation might be rescheduled for next week, though no official date has been confirmed.

Russian Media Broadcasts Footage of Frozen Trucks Carrying Bodies

On June 8, Russian media released videos showing large refrigerated trucks allegedly transporting the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers.

The footage revealed trucks with Russian license plates, white body bags, and visible cold vapor escaping from slightly open containers at the back. Russian personnel were seen in uniforms managing the transport process.

Rising Humanitarian Tensions Amid Escalating Conflict

The publication of soldiers' identities and visuals of deceased bodies has sparked humanitarian and diplomatic tensions. Russia accuses Ukraine of violating mutual agreements, while Kyiv counters that Moscow is using sensitive imagery for propaganda purposes.

Balitsky characterized the delays as part of a "broader pattern of violations" by Ukraine and criticized Western nations for fueling the conflict by supplying weapons instead of promoting negotiations.

Conclusion

Russia’s decision to publicly release the identities of Ukrainian soldiers killed in action adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing conflict. While framed as a humanitarian gesture, the move has intensified political and military tensions between Moscow and Kyiv. All eyes are now on whether the body and prisoner exchanges will proceed as rumored next week, or if further delays will deepen mistrust between the warring parties.
