Up to 400,000 Displaced from Sudan’s Darfur Camp After RSF Takeover: UN Warns of Deepening Crisis

Up to 400,000 people have been forced to flee the Zamzam displacement camp in Darfur, Sudan, following its capture by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This marks one of the largest displacements since the conflict erupted in Sudan in 2023.

1. Ground Reality: Insecurity Spikes in Darfur

Darfur, a region scarred by decades of conflict, is now witnessing a fresh wave of humanitarian emergency. Once a shelter for over 300,000 displaced persons, Zamzam camp has become a danger zone – with limited access to food, clean water, and medical aid.

OCHA states that humanitarian access to the area is almost entirely blocked, raising fears of starvation, disease, and violence among those still trapped or on the move.

2. Who are the RSF – and Why Are They a Concern?

The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were once affiliated with the Sudanese military but have since become a rival paramilitary force, playing a major role in the ongoing civil war. Since April 2023, they’ve been locked in a brutal power struggle with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

The RSF has been accused of serious human rights violations, including attacks on civilians, sexual violence, and obstructing aid. Their occupation of strategic sites like Zamzam raises alarms over the safety of displaced communities and the potential for wider regional destabilization.

3. Global Response and Humanitarian Outlook

UN agencies such as UNHCR, WFP, and WHO have issued urgent appeals for ceasefires and humanitarian corridors. However, the RSF's expanding control in western Sudan is making coordinated relief efforts nearly impossible.

Analysts warn that the Sudan crisis is nearing a tipping point, with repercussions for neighboring countries and global security.

4. What Comes Next?

Sudan faces a triple crisis:

Ongoing armed conflict between RSF and SAF

Worsening displacement and humanitarian breakdown

Threat of regional spillover into Chad, South Sudan, and Ethiopia

The displacement of 400,000 people is just the beginning. The international community must act urgently to restore access for aid organizations and pressure warring parties toward peace.
