Trump to Call Putin, Zelenskyy, and NATO Leaders Monday to Discuss Ceasefire and Trade
18 tháng 5 2025
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to speak separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several NATO leaders on Monday, aiming to broker a ceasefire and discuss trade relations.
In a post on Truth Social on Saturday, Trump wrote:
“I will be speaking, by telephone, to President Vladimir Putin of Russia on Monday, at 10:00 A.M. The subjects of the call will be stopping the ‘bloodbath’ that is killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week, and trade.”
Trump added that he will follow up with calls to President Zelenskyy and, jointly with him, members of NATO:
“Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war – a war that should have never happened – will end. God bless us all!!!”
Trump Seeks to Restart Peace Talks After Putin Skipped Previous Round
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump confirmed he is reinitiating peace efforts after Putin skipped recent peace talks held in Turkey.
“I think it’s time for us to just do it,” Trump said as he boarded Air Force One after his four-day trip to the Middle East. “He and I will meet, and I think we’ll solve it — or maybe not. At least we’ll know. And if we don’t solve it, it’ll be very interesting.”
Frustrations Mount Over Peace Mediation
According to CNN, Trump has expressed growing frustration with the complexity of brokering a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. Privately, he has told advisers that mediating the war has proven more difficult than anticipated.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump frequently pledged that he could end the war in 24 hours if re-elected — a bold claim that became a central point of his foreign policy platform.
Trump Now Blames Both Sides
In recent remarks, Trump has shifted from blaming Ukraine alone to criticizing both Russia and Ukraine. He previously accused Zelenskyy of making inflammatory remarks and escalating tensions by insisting Ukraine would never cede Crimea to Russia.
Trump also reprimanded Putin for launching missile strikes on Ukraine in late April, calling them “unnecessary and poorly timed.”
