Apple Considers Using OpenAI or Anthropic to Power Next-Gen Siri
01 tháng 7 2025
In a major strategic shift, Apple is exploring the use of artificial intelligence models from OpenAI or Anthropic to power an upgraded version of Siri, according to a Bloomberg News report published on Monday.
The news boosted investor confidence, with Apple shares closing up 2% despite trading lower earlier in the session.
Apple Opens Door to Third-Party AI Integration
Citing sources familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that Apple has held talks with both OpenAI and Anthropic. The tech giant is reportedly asking the companies to train custom versions of their large language models (LLMs) that can run on Apple’s own cloud infrastructure for internal testing.
However, the discussions are still in early stages, and Apple has not yet made a final decision on adopting external AI models.
Anthropic, which is backed by Amazon, declined to comment. Apple and OpenAI did not respond to requests from Reuters.
AI Strategy Under Pressure
Earlier in March, Apple confirmed that Siri’s AI improvements would be delayed until 2026, without offering specific reasons. Bloomberg later revealed that Apple CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in AI chief John Giannandrea, leading to a reshuffling of the Siri leadership team. Mike Rockwell has since taken over to accelerate Apple’s AI ambitions.
While competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are racing ahead with cutting-edge AI integration, Apple has been more cautious and consumer-focused — prioritizing practical enhancements over sweeping AI announcements.
WWDC 2025: Subtle but Strategic AI Shifts
At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2025, Apple introduced several smart updates — such as live call translations — and emphasized improving real-world user experiences.
Notably, Apple also announced that it will open access to its foundational AI model to third-party developers. The company confirmed plans to offer both its own and OpenAI’s code completion tools within its development platforms, marking a shift toward more collaborative AI development.
Siri’s Future: A Smarter, More Open AI Assistant?
If Apple ultimately chooses to integrate models from OpenAI or Anthropic, Siri could enter a new era of natural language capabilities — potentially matching or exceeding the performance of current AI assistants like ChatGPT or Claude.
For a company long known for its closed ecosystem, this move signals a major strategic pivot, acknowledging the competitive pressure and growing user expectations in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
