Devastating Earthquake Strikes Myanmar and Thailand: Buildings Collapse, Hundreds Injured or Dead

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand at midday, causing widespread destruction, hundreds of casualties, and panic among thousands seeking shelter.

A Catastrophic Midday Disaster

At 12:50 PM local time, a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake shook central Myanmar near Mandalay. The tremors not only wreaked havoc in Myanmar but also sent shockwaves through Thailand and neighboring countries. In Bangkok, terrified residents evacuated buildings as powerful tremors rattled the city.

Initial reports indicate that dozens of buildings have collapsed, including an ancient temple in Mandalay and a 30-story high-rise in Bangkok. Hundreds of people are believed to be trapped under the rubble, as rescue teams race against time to find survivors.

Myanmar: The Devastation Unfolds

According to the latest reports, at least 103 people have lost their lives in Myanmar, with hundreds more injured. Mandalay, one of the hardest-hit cities, has seen extensive damage, with buildings reduced to ruins and roads severely damaged. A major dam has also collapsed, causing localized flooding and forcing emergency evacuations.

In response to the crisis, Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in six regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Bago, Magway, Shan State, and Naypyidaw.

A local official described the disaster:

"I have never experienced an earthquake this terrifying. The ground shook violently, walls cracked open, and within seconds, entire buildings crumbled."

Bangkok Shaken, Many Trapped

In Thailand, the capital city of Bangkok was also severely impacted. A 30-story building in Chatuchak district collapsed entirely, resulting in at least three confirmed deaths and 90 people reported missing.

The city’s metro and light rail systems were partially suspended for safety reasons. The Stock Exchange of Thailand halted trading temporarily as employees rushed to evacuate.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra immediately declared Bangkok a disaster zone and ordered military, police, and emergency response teams to aid in search and rescue operations.

Regional Impact Felt Across Borders

Beyond Myanmar and Thailand, the earthquake’s tremors were felt in several neighboring countries, including China, India, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Laos. In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, residents reported feeling minor ground tremors.

Experts have warned of strong aftershocks in the coming hours, heightening concerns of further destruction and risk.

International Aid Mobilized

Given the severity of the disaster, multiple nations have pledged support for Myanmar and Thailand. India and the European Union are preparing to send emergency response teams, while humanitarian organizations are coordinating relief efforts for earthquake victims.

A United Nations representative stated:

"We are closely monitoring the situation and will provide all necessary assistance to help the people of Myanmar and Thailand recover from this devastating event."

A Race Against Time

As rescue operations continue, emergency workers are tirelessly searching for survivors amid the rubble. Authorities have urged residents to avoid unstable buildings and prepare for potential aftershocks.

Both Myanmar and Thailand are facing one of their worst natural disasters in recent years. International support will be crucial in helping affected communities rebuild and recover from this catastrophic earthquake.
