Domestic Gas Prices Edge Up in September After Three Months of Decline
01 tháng 9 2025
Hanoi – Retail gas prices in Vietnam turned upward in September 2025, marking a slight increase after three consecutive months of decline. The main reason for this adjustment is fluctuations in the USD/VND exchange rate, even though global LPG prices remained unchanged compared to August.
According to Petrolimex Gas Corporation, the retail price of a 12-kg household cylinder in Hanoi (including VAT) is now VND 417,400, up VND 1,300 from last month. The 48-kg industrial cylinder price has been adjusted to VND 1,669,300, an increase of VND 5,200.
Why Did Domestic Gas Prices Increase in September?
Petrolimex representatives explained that the average global LPG contract price for September stayed at USD 505 per ton, unchanged from August. However, fluctuations in the USD/VND exchange rate have pushed up import costs, leading to this price adjustment.
Since the beginning of 2025, domestic gas prices have seen one increase, five reductions, and three periods of stability, reflecting their sensitivity to global markets and currency fluctuations.
Global LPG Pricing and Vietnam’s Dependence on Imports
International gas prices are based on the Contract Price (CP), announced monthly by major suppliers such as Saudi Aramco. In Vietnam, LPG prices remain closely tied to global import prices because domestic production cannot fully meet consumption demand. Key factors influencing gas prices include exchange rates, transportation fees, import taxes, and supply-demand dynamics.
Tips for Households to Save Gas
Check for gas leaks regularly to avoid waste and ensure safety.
Use energy-efficient stoves, which can reduce consumption by 8%.
Clean burners and stove components weekly and use flat-bottomed pots with appropriate diameters for optimal heat efficiency.
LNG Prices in the U.S. Rise Amid Tight Supply
As of 5:50 p.m. (Vietnam time) on August 31, U.S. natural gas (LNG) prices stood at USD 3.02 per mmBTU, up 2.46% from the previous level. The increase was driven by lower-than-expected storage levels, reduced daily output, and higher LNG export flows.
According to LSEG, average natural gas production in the U.S. Lower 48 states reached 108.4 billion cubic feet per day in August, surpassing July’s record of 107.8 billion cubic feet per day.
