Trump Hints at Tariff Reconsideration for Vietnam in Truth Social Post

05 tháng 4 2025・ 02:09

On April 5, U.S. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, revealing that he had an “excellent and productive” call with Vietnamese General Secretary Tô Lâm regarding bilateral trade and tariffs.

“Just got off a very productive call with Vietnam's General Secretary Tô Lâm. We discussed trade and the importance of fair cooperation. If a bilateral trade deal is reached, I would consider reducing tariffs on Vietnamese goods down to ZERO. Great potential between our two nations!” — Trump posted.

This post came just three days after Trump signed a sweeping tariff policy imposing a baseline 10% tariff on imports from all countries, triggering volatility in global markets and concerns from U.S. manufacturers.

However, Trump’s recent tone toward Vietnam suggests potential exemptions or adjustments, especially if a bilateral agreement can be reached. He praised Vietnam’s role as an emerging manufacturing hub and hinted that the country could play a key role in diversifying U.S. supply chains away from China.

The post quickly went viral on social media platforms in both countries. Many Vietnamese businesses and investors reacted positively, with shares of companies heavily involved in U.S. exports seeing a temporary boost.

Industry analysts believe this could be a strategic move by Trump to maintain good relations in Southeast Asia while applying pressure on other trade partners like China and the EU.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.

If negotiations do lead to a formal exemption or reduction, it could signal a major win for Vietnamese exporters and further deepen U.S.-Vietnam trade ties amid a shifting global economic landscape.
