Pope Francis Passes Away at 88 on Easter Monday
21 tháng 4 2025
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church and its first Latin American pontiff, died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88. He passed away at 7:35 a.m. local time in his residence at the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta, following a prolonged battle with double pneumonia.
Elected in March 2013, Pope Francis was renowned for his humility and progressive vision. He chose to reside in the Vatican guesthouse rather than the traditional Apostolic Palace and was a vocal advocate for the poor and marginalized. His papacy was marked by efforts to reform the Church, including addressing clerical sexual abuse, advocating for migrants, and promoting environmental stewardship.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes worldwide, reflecting on his significant impact on the Catholic Church and global social issues. The College of Cardinals will convene a conclave to elect his successor, with Cardinals Pietro Parolin of Italy, Robert Sarah of Guinea, and Luis Tagle of the Philippines among the anticipated candidates.
Funeral arrangements are underway, with mourners gathering in St. Peter's Square to honor his legacy.
