President Orders 2,000 Troops to Respond to Violent Immigration Demonstrations in L.A.
President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to violent immigration protests. California Gov. Gavin Newsom denounces the move as inflammatory and unnecessary.
Why Trump Is Sending the National Guard to Los Angeles
The White House confirmed Saturday night that President Donald Trump signed an executive order to deploy 2,000 National Guard members to Los Angeles, California, in response to escalating immigration protests and clashes with federal agents.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated:
“In recent days, violent mobs have attacked ICE officers and federal law enforcement agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles, California.”
State vs. Federal: Newsom Condemns the Move
California Governor Gavin Newsom pushed back strongly, labeling the federal deployment as “purposefully inflammatory” and claiming that it would only escalate tensions.
“Los Angeles authorities are fully capable of requesting law enforcement assistance as needed. There is no unmet need,” Newsom posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Defense Secretary Hints at Possible U.S. Marines Involvement
In a more aggressive stance, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton may also be deployed if violence continues.
“If violence continues, active duty Marines will be mobilized. They are on high alert,” he posted on X.
Political Reactions: From “Insurrection” to Injury
Vice President JD Vance called the protestors “insurrectionists” waving foreign flags and accused them of attacking immigration enforcement officers.
David Huerta, president of SEIU California, was injured and arrested during the protests. The Department of Homeland Security claims he was obstructing federal agents.
Official White House Memo: A National Security Framing
The White House released a formal memo addressed to the Secretaries of Defense, Homeland Security, and the Attorney General:
“To the extent that protests or acts of violence directly inhibit the execution of the laws, they constitute a form of rebellion against the authority of the United States Government.”
Trump invoked his constitutional authority to federalize part of California’s National Guard to restore order.
