Russian Air Defense Shoots Down 9 Drones Near the Capital; Vnukovo and Domodedovo Airports Temporarily Closed

Russia says nine Ukrainian drones were shot down near Moscow, forcing the temporary closure of Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports. The attacks come amid renewed peace talks and intensified cross-border strikes.

Drone Attacks Disrupt Air Traffic in Moscow

Early Sunday morning, Russian authorities reported that Ukrainian drone attacks targeted the capital city, forcing the closure of two major airports — Vnukovo and Domodedovo.

According to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian air defense systems intercepted and destroyed nine drones approaching the city by 0400 GMT.

“Emergency services have been dispatched to the sites where drone debris fell. There are no reports of major damage at this time,” Sobyanin said on Telegram.

Tula and Kaluga Regions Also Targeted – Casualties Reported

In addition to the attack on Moscow, drones also struck Tula and Kaluga, regions south of the capital:

A short-lived fire broke out at the Azot chemical plant in Tula, injuring two people, regional officials reported.

In Kaluga, Russian forces reportedly shot down seven drones.

Russia Halts Flights to Ensure Aviation Safety

Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency (Rosaviatsia) announced the temporary suspension of flights at Vnukovo and Domodedovo — two of Moscow’s busiest airports — as a precautionary measure.

“To ensure flight safety, operations at both airports have been halted until further notice,” the agency said on Telegram.

Spike in Attacks Despite Return to Peace Negotiations

The drone strikes come as both Russia and Ukraine ramp up cross-border assaults while also reengaging in peace talks — the first such diplomatic efforts since early in the war, which began in February 2022.

As of now, Ukraine has not issued any official response to the drone attack claims.
